For Writers

If you’re here because you’re considering reaching out about a review, this page is for you.

Very Little Context is a reader-first project. Reviews exist to build trust with readers and to engage seriously with the work — not to generate hype or guaranteed praise.

What Reviews Are (Here)

Reviews on this site are:

  • honest
  • specific
  • written in full sentences
  • grounded in the actual reading experience

They may include dark humor, frustration, enthusiasm, or discomfort — whatever accurately reflects the book.

A review is not a blurb. It is not marketing copy. It is not written to be universally agreeable.

What Reviews Are Not

  • Paid promotions
  • Guaranteed positive coverage
  • Influencer-style summaries
  • Obligatory five-star reads

Submitting a book does not guarantee a Spotlight feature, a completed read, or a favorable response.

Finished Reads and DNFs

Some books are finished. Some are not.

DNFs are labeled clearly, including the percentage where reading stopped. This is not a judgment of effort or intent — it reflects reader experience only.

If a book is not finished, the review will focus on why it stopped working rather than on its ending.

Spotlight Reviews

Some reviews appear temporarily as Spotlights on the homepage.

Spotlights:

  • are time-bound (generally 2–4 weeks)
  • are chosen editorially
  • rotate quietly into the Reviews Archive

A Spotlight is a moment of attention, not a rating or endorsement.

The Reviews Archive

All reviews — including Spotlights after rotation — live permanently in the Reviews Archive.

Reviews are not edited after publication to soften tone, change conclusions, or respond to reception.

Requests and Boundaries

You are welcome to reach out if:

  • you are comfortable with honest critique
  • you understand that not all books will resonate
  • you value thoughtful engagement over promotion

You should not reach out if:

  • you are seeking guaranteed praise
  • you expect editorial control
  • you are uncomfortable with dark or candid commentary

Disclosure

If a review is written at an author’s request, that context will be disclosed clearly.

The presence of a disclosure does not alter the content of the review.

Final Note

If your book appears here and the review is sharp, it means it was taken seriously.

If it appears here and the review is warm, it means it earned that response.

Either way, the goal is the same: to read carefully, write honestly, and respect the work by engaging with it fully.
